The ProClinical C200 is one Colgate's best electric toothbrushes, and whilst you can’t expect to find all of the technologies that are included with the ProClinical C600 and ProClinical A1500 it doesn’t mean this sonic toothbrush lacks in features, in fact it does include many of the things you would expect to find on a more expensive model including a quadrant timer which ensures you spend equal time within each section of your mouth, this is important to ensure your mouth is evenly clean.

The C200 is also one of the better options for price compared to power, it’s very powerful for such an inexpensive device, and with an amazing 25,500 strokes per minute the fast action ensures that stains are thoroughly polished clean and plaque is quickly swept away, in fact the manufacturer's claim that it removes 5x more plaque than a standard manual brush, this is great news for those who want to improve their dental health by making one easy switch. It also means that teeth will be naturally whitened over time reducing the need for the use of a harsh abrasive toothpaste, protecting your enamel for longer. These are all key features which people might be looking for in a new sonic brush.

The ProClinical C200 also has an overall two minute timer, which ensures you spend enough time cleaning your teeth, dentists recommend that you always clean your teeth for a full two minutes, yet recent studies show that it is rare that most adults actually comply with this, the build-in timer helps you relearn how to make sure you take care of your dental health correctly and it will make sure that you shake off any bad habits picked up whilst using your old manual toothbrush. Brushing for the full two minutes greatly improves the amount of bacteria removed from your teeth and gum, and the sweeping action removes bacteria from even the most difficult to reach nooks and carnies of your mouth. We found after using it for just a few weeks our routine has improved a lot, but bad habits die hard and perseverance is key,

The ProClinical C200 has been designed to include an ergonomic handle which makes daily use of this powered toothbrush super easy, it's shaped to mould to your hand making it really comfortable to use. It's been covered in a special strong grip material which remains easy to grab even when the handle gets wet as it often does in the bathroom.  As well as this it's slim sleek design it is actually quite lightweight making it ideal for taking on weekend trips away and we think that its modern look should fit perfectly into the most stylish bathrooms with ease.

The most surprising feature for a sonic toothbrush of this price is the sonic wave action which it utilises for superior cleaning to both teeth and gums. This is the same technology used in the same brands other sonic toothbrushes, the C600 and A1500. The sonic wave clears areas of your mouth which a rotary brush wouldn't normally reach to clean, it gets right in between teeth to remove food debris which cause bacteria to build up, dentist's often refer to this as an interdental cleaning routine and it reduces the need for regular flossing, although personally I would recommend you still floss occasionally just to make sure your mouth is as clean as it can be.
So now we have outlined the main features of one of the best electric toothbrushes lets take a look what you actually get for your money, firstly when you open the box the contents should be as follows:

  • The Colgate ProClinical C200 electric toothbrush handle
  • Colgate’s Triple Clean brush head  (Please note the additional sensitive head is fully compatible but is only available as an additional extra and does not come included with the C200. It does however come as part of the C600 and A1500 package)
  • Charging base with space to store an additional spare head  (Don't forget:  The plug on your new toothbrush charger will be a two-pin bathroom safe plug which means you might need an adaptor to get it to charge correctly, but don’t worry these only cost £3 on Amazon)
  • And finally a really sturdy travel case - ideal for those who spend weekends away from home or who travel for work, it’s small and should protect everything nicely.

So now we have covered what you get when you first open the box lets take a look at the technology behind the great cleaning power of the toothbrush itself, it cleans using a unique sonic action which makes sure your teeth are perfectly cleaned each time you use the brush. It does this by combining both up-down and side-to-side strokes, which sweep away plaque, this in turn will contribute towards much healthier gums, we think it’s great you get all this power from just one brushing mode.

When the sweeping strokes and sonic pulses are combined with the intelligently designed ergonomic handle you will be able to reach parts of your mouth that your current manual toothbrush just won’t manage. The excellent lightweight and slim profile also help you to fit the head into your mouth comfortably which is great for reaching the molars at the back of the mouth, which can be a notorious place for cavities to form.

The reason that the entire ProClinical range is so effective is that the product line has been developed in partnership with a large company called Omron, who specialise in developing new high-tech smart sensors for use in modern robotics, they have well known for developing health equipment which changes lives this includes advanced machines like ECG's  and blood glucose monitors to help sufferers of diabetes and they have taken their expert knowledge to help Colgate to develop a great feature packed sonic device which includes lots of things you would only expect to find on a higher end model.

So one of the most important parts of any toothbrush review is answering the question will this product help you to improve your dental hygiene?

Well, Colgate claim through their website that this electric toothbrush will improve your dental health in the following ways,:

5 Times better plaque reduction: This means it can remove 5x  the plaque when compared to your normal manual toothbrush, this has been tested and verified by Colgate and when we have read online reviews for the product people largely agree that plaque levels have been reduced. By reducing plaque and bacteria in your mouth you are less likely to require dental fillings. A big plus when dental treatments cost so much these days.

A Polishing effect for a natural whiteness: Using it's vibrations this sonic toothbrush will naturally help remove stains such as red wine and coffee from your teeth. Over time this will lead to a more naturally white smile without the need for abrasive toothpastes. This is great if you want to protect your teeth’s vital enamel surface whilst also maintaining a healthy looking smile, making this one of the better powered toothbrush for polishing and stain removal.

Interdentally clean: Colgate's unique toothbrush heads are designed to provide cleaning deep in between teeth, although unlike Oral-B's flossing head they don't claim the interdental head will replace flossing. However we found that by using it daily the need for flossing is reduced and when you think that most British adults don't floss anyway most people will see this as a nice perk to the brush. It's great if you hate using floss or find it difficult to achieve a successful deep clean between teeth.

Using their handy 2 minute timer: Let the toothbrush lead the way, it is designed to automatically turn itself off when you reach the dentist specified  2 minute brushing time, this helps prevent damage from over brushing and will ensure you don't shy away from the full two minute clean.

Quadrant 30 second pacer:  This great feature takes some getting used to but the brush pauses every 30 seconds, this indicates that you should move to another quadrant in the mouth, by separating upper, lower left and right you ensure your mouth gets an even, balanced deep clean. We agree that cleaning our teeth in this way is bound to improve the long term quality of your teeth.

Replacement toothbrush heads:  Colgate offer two different types of replacement brush heads, this is less than five Oral-B have to offer but they do a great job deep cleaning your teeth, you can choose between Triple Clean or Sensitive. The ProClinical C200 comes with a triple clean brush head but if you suffer from sensitive teeth then we would suggest you try a sensitive head instead. Both the sensitive and the triple clean are very affordable which is important when you're choosing the best electric toothbrush. This makes it easy to follow dentist's general advice to review and replace your brush head up to four times a year.

When we used the Proclinical Triple Clean Brush head we noticed it featured spiral effect bristles which the manufacturers say will help to naturally remove surface stains that build up on teeth over a long period of time. It’s special inner bristles seem to do a great the job of removing plaque from teeth surfaces, this reduces the risk of oral health problems developing such as gum disease and teeth cavities. And then finally the brush head has tapered outer bristles which are designed to clean deep along the gum line, removing any food debris which can increase bacterial growth rate and development, of course the pulsating action of the sonic toothbrush helps to do this so a similar effect can be achieved with the next brush head too.

The ProClinical Sensitive Electric Toothbrush Head which unfortunately isn’t included with the Proclinical C200, you will need to move up to the next model the C600 to get this thrown in. The sensitive brush head is uniquely designed to be easier on the gums and will help reduce the chance of damage which can be caused by over brushing. It can also help if you suffer problems with receding gums because the soft tapered bristles will clean more gently along the gum line. They still provide a similar deep clean just without the harder bristle. The head also includes extra fine inner bristles which very gently clean tooth surfaces, we found that this didn't remove staining as quickly as the normal head but over time the change is still very noticeable.

It's worth a mention that both of these heads are the same as the ones which can be used with the more expensive models from the Colgate range and as with the rest of the  toothbrushes it also includes a very smart and sturdy travel case, which is great if you use your brush away from home on a regular basis and therefore need one with good portability, the rechargeable battery within the ProClinical C200 will last a good few days even with regular use, for example if your family share the same handle. We also noticed that  when we opened the box Colgate recommend you charge your brush for at least 16 hours before you first use it.

The general feedback about the Proclinical C200 and the entire Colgate range is very positive, the only major negative mentioned was the noise it makes, some people felt it was a little loud, but we are of the opinion that even the worlds greatest sonic toothbrush is never going to be silent and since Amazon has almost 100 good reviews for the C200 we think it has generally been received well by UK consdumers. Amazon feature it in their list of the best electric toothbrushes and has an overall average rating of 4.5, only half a star short of full marks.

Overall the C200 offers more than you would expect from a normal rechargeable brush, the sonic technology really does a great job of both polishing and cleaning your teeth and we were really quite impressed with the results, however if you need something with more brushing customisation, for example if you have weak or receding gums, then you should consider looking at the Colgate Preclinical C600. It includes all of the features from the C200 as well fully customisable brushing modes which allow you to control how powerful and fast the brush cleans.

If you're looking for the very best electric toothbrush from Colgate’s range we highly suggest you read our A1500 review to find out more about Colgate's Smart Sensor technology. It adjusts both the speed and pressure of the head automatically depending on how you hold the brush against clean each area of your mouth, it’s really clever technology but a little bit more expensive or if you're specifically looking for a kids sonic toothbrush you can find all of our reviews here.
